Airport and Port Transfers in Fes

Fes-Saiss (FEZ) is 15 km south of the city and handles a useful spread of European routes, which makes a fly-in, fly-out northern itinerary genuinely practical. Casablanca is the alternative, four hours by road or by train with the car meeting you at the station.

Wherever you arrive, the last kilometre is the one that matters. Tell us the riad name and we identify the gate: Bab Boujloud, Bab Rcif and Bab Guissa each serve a different part of the medina, and picking wrong means a long walk over uneven ground with a suitcase.

Trips That Start in Fes

1 day - Volubilis, Moulay Idriss and Meknes

An hour west to the best-preserved Roman site in Morocco, with mosaics still in the ground, then the hill town of Moulay Idriss and the imperial gates of Meknes before returning by evening. Europeans with any interest in the Roman world consistently rate this above the city tours.

1 day - Chefchaouen and back

Four hours each way through the Rif to the blue town, five or six hours there, back after dark. Long but very doable, and the alternative - a night in Chefchaouen - is the better version if your schedule allows it.

2 days - Fes to Merzouga

South through Ifrane and the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, down the Ziz Gorge past the palm oases to the Erg Chebbi dunes for a night in a desert camp. The classic north-to-south crossing.

5 days - Fes to Marrakech the long way

Fes, the desert, the Dades and Todra gorges, Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, then over Tizi n Tichka into Marrakech, with the same driver and vehicle throughout and no repeated ground.

Driving and Getting Around Fes

The medina is the whole point of Fes and it is completely closed to vehicles. Cars circulate on the boulevards of the ville nouvelle and around the walls, but inside Bab Boujloud you are walking. Plan arrivals and departures around the gates rather than the address.

Traffic in the ville nouvelle is perfectly manageable; the trouble is the approach roads to the gates, which stay narrow and clogged for most of the day, Bab Rcif worst of all. Our drivers know which entrance functions at which hour and will divert rather than queue.

The road south is spectacular and long. Ifrane is an Alpine-looking town at 1,665 m where snow closes roads occasionally in winter, and the descent through the Ziz Gorge has few services. Drivers carry water and check conditions before setting off, particularly between December and March.
