For European travellers Tangier is Morocco's front door in a way it is for nobody else. The ferry from Algeciras takes ninety minutes to Tanger Med; the fast ferry from Tarifa takes an hour into the city terminal itself. Thousands of Europeans arrive here every week with their own vehicles, and thousands more cross on foot for the day.
The city has changed faster than any other in Morocco this century. The commercial port moved out of town to Tanger Med, 40 km east, the corniche has been rebuilt, and a high-speed rail line now runs to Casablanca in a little over two hours.
That distance to Tanger Med catches people out, as does the medina, which is small by Moroccan standards but still closed to vehicles, and the Rif roads south towards Chefchaouen, which are mountain roads with real switchbacks rather than the motorway most visitors picture.
