Tangier has been rebuilt faster than any other Moroccan city this century. The commercial port shifted out of town to Tanger Med, the corniche was redone, and a high-speed line now reaches Casablanca in a little over two hours. For Canadians it usually shows up as the opening of a north-to-south route, often bolted onto a European leg of the same trip.

The logistics deserve a look. Tanger Med is 40 km east of the city, so a ferry arrival is not a stroll into the medina. The airport is 15 km southwest. The old town is small by Moroccan standards but still closed to vehicles, and the Rif roads south towards Chefchaouen are genuine mountain driving rather than the highway people imagine.

Every booking is private, so the shape of the day is yours: the cape and the caves in the morning, the kasbah in the afternoon, and then either a ferry back to Spain or the road south. The rate is set before you travel and covers fuel, tolls and the driver.

Why hire a driver here

  • Tanger Med is 40 km out of town - a ferry arrival needs planning
  • Chefchaouen is reached over the mountains, with nothing motorway about it
  • Both medina and kasbah are walking territory; vehicles barely penetrate
  • Day crossings from Spain run to a schedule that has to be worked backwards
  • Neither Cap Spartel nor the Caves of Hercules is within the city at all

Included in every booking

  • Fuel, tolls and the driver's fee for the agreed route
  • Airport, ferry port, hotel or Tanger Ville station pickup
  • English or French-speaking drivers, your choice
  • Ferry timing coordination for same-day returns to Spain
  • Bottled water and phone charging in the vehicle

Ibn Battouta (TNG) is 15 km southwest of the centre, an easy 20-minute run. Tanger Med, where the Algeciras ferries dock, is 40 km east and nearer 40 minutes - a gap that surprises anyone expecting to walk off the boat into the old town.

Tanger Ville station puts Casablanca two hours and ten minutes away by high-speed train, which makes a north-south itinerary straightforward. A common Canadian pattern is train one way, private car the other, and we meet trains exactly as we meet flights.

Trips That Start in Tangier

Half day - Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules

West along the coast to the lighthouse where two seas meet, then the Caves of Hercules with their Africa-shaped opening onto the water, returning through the Marshan quarter. Two to three hours, and the best short outing here.

1 day - Tangier from Tarifa or Algeciras

Met at Tanger Med or the fast-ferry terminal, cape and caves in the morning, lunch in the medina, kasbah and Grand Socco after, back at the port with margin against the last sailing.

1 day - Chefchaouen and back

Two hours over the Rif into the blue town, the afternoon spent wandering the medina, then the climb to the Spanish Mosque as the light turns, with Tangier again by nightfall.

Transfer - Tangier to Fes or Marrakech

Four hours southeast to Fes, usually by way of Chefchaouen or Volubilis, or a longer run south to Marrakech. The natural opening leg of a north-to-south trip with one driver throughout.

Driving and Getting Around Tangier

The centre is compact and the traffic is mild by Moroccan standards, but the medina and kasbah are pedestrian and the lanes around the Grand Socco are tight. Drivers set down at the edge and collect from an agreed point rather than attempting the old town.

The two arrival points behave nothing alike. The airport run is short and predictable; Tanger Med adds a real drive plus the port's own security and shuttle process, which can cost half an hour on a busy sailing. Factor that into any same-day return to Spain.

The N2 to Chefchaouen is proper mountain road - 110 km in two hours, sustained switchbacks, roadside stalls on the shoulder. Well surfaced and not dangerous, but not a road to rush, and our drivers pace it accordingly.

FAQs

Tangier Car Hire With Driver - Your Questions

How much is a private driver in Tangier in Canadian dollars?

A sedan with driver starts around a day, an SUV roughly and a van . Prices convert to Canadian dollars automatically and include fuel, tolls and the driver.

How far is Tanger Med from Tangier city?

About 40 km east, roughly 40 minutes. It catches out plenty of visitors who assume the ferry docks in the city - the old port no longer handles the Algeciras route. The Tarifa fast ferry does arrive at the city terminal, which is far closer.

Can we do Tangier as a day trip from Spain?

Easily, and we run it most days in season. Send us your ferry times when you book and we work the day backwards from the return sailing with a margin built in. Cap Spartel, the caves, the medina and the kasbah all fit.

Is Chefchaouen possible as a day trip from Tangier?

Yes - two hours each way through the Rif leaves five or six hours in the town. It is a long day and an overnight is better if you have it, but plenty of visitors do it and come back happy.

Train or car from Tangier to Casablanca?

The high-speed train is genuinely good - two hours ten, comfortable and inexpensive. Take it if Casablanca is your only stop. Take the car if you want Chefchaouen, Volubilis or Meknes on the way, none of which the train passes.

Do you meet cruise passengers at the port?

Yes. Give us the ship and the all-aboard time and we plan against it. Tangier calls are short, so we prioritise the cape, the caves and the kasbah rather than trying to cover everything.
