Marrakech handles more arrivals than anywhere else in Morocco, and for Canadians it is usually where the trip properly begins. Royal Air Maroc runs the Montreal-Casablanca nonstop year-round, Air Transat flies seasonally into Marrakech itself, and the rest of our Canadian guests connect through Paris, Lisbon or Madrid. Either way you land having crossed the Atlantic overnight, four or five hours ahead of Eastern time.
One thing Canadians have that most visitors do not: French. It is Morocco's second language of business, signage and tourism, and a Quebecois traveller can read menus, road signs and contracts here without effort. That is a genuine advantage - but it does not help with the medina, which is a sealed grid of one-way lanes no vehicle enters regardless of what language you ask in.
Every booking is private. The vehicle, the driver and the day belong to your group alone, so you can leave for the desert before dawn, stop on the Kik Plateau because the light is worth it, or spend an extra hour at an argan cooperative without asking permission. The price is agreed before you fly and covers fuel, tolls and the driver.
