Marrakech takes more arrivals than any other Moroccan city and is where most Singaporean trips start. There is no direct service, so nearly everyone connects through Doha, Dubai or Istanbul - roughly eighteen hours door to door, arriving seven or eight hours behind Singapore time.

The thing that catches Singaporean visitors out is not the driving or the language. It is the distances. Morocco looks compact on a map and is not: Marrakech to the Sahara is nine hours, Marrakech to Fes is seven. A week here rewards a tight plan and punishes an ambitious one, and the single most useful thing a driver does is tell you honestly what will not fit.

Beyond that, the medina is a sealed grid of one-way lanes admitting no vehicle at all, and parking near Jemaa el-Fna is negotiated with an informal attendant rather than paid at a machine. Airport and Port Transfers in Marrakech

Menara (RAK) is 6 km south-west of the medina, so the drive is short - but the arrivals hall backs up when several flights land together, and haggling at a taxi rank after eighteen hours in transit is a poor start. Your driver waits inside the terminal with a name board and walks you out to the vehicle.

Marrakech is also where the railway stops. Trains from Casablanca and Rabat arrive at Gueliz, and the most efficient Singaporean itineraries often use the fast train in the north and a private car in the south, where the line simply ends. Station pickups work exactly like airport ones, at the same fixed price.

Trips That Start in Marrakech

1 day - Ourika Valley and the Atlas foothills

Out after breakfast, a Berber house and an argan co-operative en route, the walk to the Setti Fatma waterfalls, lunch by the river and back mid-afternoon. The right first day when you have landed that morning and are still adjusting.

1 day - Essaouira on the Atlantic

Two and a half hours through argan country, complete with tree-climbing goats, then five hours along the ramparts, round the fishing harbour and across the old Portuguese quarter before heading back at sunset.

3 days - Marrakech to Merzouga and back

Tizi n Tichka, Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate on day one; the Dades and Todra gorges to the Erg Chebbi dunes with a night under canvas on day two; back via the Draa Valley palm groves on day three. Three days is the honest minimum.

6 days - the efficient loop

Marrakech, the desert, the gorges, then north to Fes and out from there - the most that fits comfortably into a week without spending it all in a vehicle. We will tell you if your dates are tighter than the plan.

Driving and Getting Around Marrakech

Marrakech traffic runs on negotiation rather than lane markings, with petit taxis, scooters, horse-drawn caleches and handcarts sharing the same space. After Singapore's order it takes a day to stop flinching, which is a day most people would rather spend in the souks.

The medina is pedestrian. Cars reach a few wider streets but never the derbs where most riads sit, so every arrival finishes on foot. Send the riad name when you book and the driver picks the nearest gate - it can save fifteen minutes of hauling a case over uneven stone.

Past the city boundary the surfaces are sound but the driving has its own rules. The N9 to Ouarzazate climbs to 2,260 m at the Tizi n Tichka and is under resurfacing in places; snow shuts it for a few hours on some winter days, which our drivers verify before leaving. Neither the N8 to Agadir nor the R207 to Essaouira is difficult, though speed enforcement on both is severe.

Can the driver get into the Marrakech medina?

Not all the way. The medina is a network of narrow lanes closed to traffic, so the driver stops at the nearest gate - Bab Doukkala, Bab Laksour or Bab Agnaou depending on the riad - and helps with the luggage to the entrance of the derb. Give us the riad name and we pick the shortest walk.

How long is the drive from Marrakech to the Sahara?

About nine hours to Merzouga, so nobody does it in one day. Two days with a night in Dades or Ouarzazate is standard; three is better. If you only have a week, this is the trip to build everything else around.

Is it worth taking the train instead for part of the route?

For Casablanca, Rabat and Tangier, yes - the trains are fast, cheap and comfortable, and we often recommend them. South of Marrakech there is no railway at all, which is where a private car stops being a preference and becomes the only option.
