Rabat is where Singaporean visitors on business spend their time, and where leisure travellers consistently underestimate how much they will enjoy the city. The ministries and most of the diplomatic corps are here, and Rabat carries a measured, orderly feel a long way from Marrakech - a fact that tends to land well with visitors from Singapore.
It repays a proper look as well. On the city edge, the Chellah was the Roman town of Sala Colonia before it became a Merinid necropolis, and now stands half garden and half ruin with storks nesting on the old minaret. The Kasbah of the Udayas is a blue-and-white quarter above the river mouth, while the Hassan Tower is the unfinished minaret of what was meant to be the largest mosque on earth.
The driving here is easy by Moroccan standards, yet the embassy quarter, the government district and the medina all sit apart, and space near the kasbah is tight. A driver removes the friction. Every booking is private and the rate fixed in advance.
