Rabat is where Indian visitors on official or corporate business spend their time, and where leisure travellers consistently underestimate how much they will enjoy the city. The Indian Embassy sits here alongside the ministries and most of the diplomatic corps, and Rabat carries a measured, orderly feel a long way from Marrakech.
It rewards a proper visit. The Chellah, on the edge of the city, was a Roman town called Sala Colonia before becoming a Merinid necropolis, and it is now half garden and half ruin with storks nesting on the minaret. The Kasbah of the Udayas is a blue-and-white quarter above the river mouth, and the Hassan Tower is the unfinished minaret of what would have been the largest mosque in the world.
By Moroccan standards the driving here is easy, yet the embassy quarter, the government district and the medina all lie apart from one another, and space near the kasbah is tight. A driver takes the friction away. Every booking is private and the rate fixed in advance.
