Tangier has been rebuilt faster than any other Moroccan city this century. The commercial port moved out to Tanger Med, the corniche was redone, and a high-speed line now reaches Casablanca in a little over two hours. The airport carries the name of Ibn Battuta, who left here in 1325, spent years in the Delhi Sultanate under Muhammad bin Tughluq, and travelled further than any other traveller of his age.

The logistics repay attention. Tanger Med lies 40 km east of the city, so arriving by ferry is nothing like walking into the medina. The airport sits 15 km to the south-west. The old town is small by Moroccan standards yet still barred to vehicles, and the Rif roads running south toward Chefchaouen are genuine mountain driving rather than the highway most people picture.

Airport and Port Transfers in Tangier

The airport is the easy one: 15 km from the centre, twenty minutes, no complications. The ferry terminal is not. Tanger Med lies 40 km east along the coast, closer to forty minutes, and passengers regularly step off the Algeciras boat expecting to be in the medina already.

For onward travel the high-speed train from Tanger Ville reaches Casablanca in two hours and ten minutes, which makes the length of Morocco surprisingly manageable. Many itineraries ride it one way and take a private car back the other. We collect from the platform exactly as we collect from arrivals.

Trips That Start in Tangier

Half day - Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules

West along the coast to the lighthouse at the meeting of two seas, then the Caves of Hercules with their Africa-shaped opening onto the water, returning through the Marshan quarter. Two to three hours, and the finest short outing available here.

Half day - the medina, the kasbah and Ibn Battuta's tomb

On foot with the driver waiting: the Grand Socco, the Petit Socco, the kasbah museum and the surprisingly modest tomb of the traveller who reached Delhi and Calicut. Best in the morning before the lanes fill.

1 day - Chefchaouen and back

Two hours south over the Rif into the blue town, an afternoon in the medina and the climb to the Spanish Mosque viewpoint at golden hour, returning to Tangier by evening.

Transfer - Tangier to Fes or Marrakech

Four hours south-east into Fes, normally through Chefchaouen or Volubilis, or the longer descent to Marrakech. It makes the natural opening leg of a north-to-south trip run by a single driver.

Driving and Getting Around Tangier

By Moroccan standards Tangier drives easily - the centre is small and the traffic never reaches Casablanca levels. What a car cannot do is enter the medina or the kasbah, and the streets feeding the Grand Socco narrow quickly, so drivers work from the edge and pick up at an agreed corner.

Do not treat the airport and the ferry port as equivalent. One is twenty predictable minutes; the other is a forty-minute drive followed by the port's own security screening and internal shuttles, which on a full sailing eats another half hour. Any same-day return to Spain has to allow for it.

Then there is the N2 south. It covers 110 km in roughly two hours, which tells you most of what you need to know - continuous switchbacks through the Rif, stalls set up on the verges, and no reason whatever to hurry. The surface is good; the pace is deliberate.

Is Chefchaouen possible as a day trip from Tangier?

Yes - two hours in each direction across the Rif still leaves five or six hours in town. It makes a long day and staying over is better if you can, but plenty of visitors take it on and return satisfied.

Train or car from Tangier to Casablanca?

The high-speed train is genuinely good - two hours ten, comfortable and cheap. Use it if Casablanca is your sole destination. Take the car if Chefchaouen, Volubilis or Meknes are wanted en route, since the train serves none of them.
