The Spanish protectorate ran the north until 1956, Ceuta and Melilla remain Spanish today, Spanish television has been watched here for decades, and the result is a city where Spanish is often the second language ahead of French. Many visitors from Latin America find they need no other.

It has also been rebuilt faster than anywhere else in Morocco this century. The commercial port moved out to Tanger Med, 40 km east, so a ferry arrival is not a walk into the medina. The airport is 15 km south-west. A high-speed line now reaches Casablanca in a little over two hours.

Combined with a stopover in Madrid, which most itineraries from the region include anyway, Tangier makes an unusually practical entry point - ferry across from Tarifa or Algeciras and start the trip in the north. Every booking is private and the rate is fixed before you travel.

Airport and Port Transfers in Tangier

Ibn Battouta (TNG) is 15 km south-west of the centre, an easy 20-minute run. Tanger Med, where the Algeciras ferries dock, is 40 km east and nearer 40 minutes - a gap that surprises anyone expecting to step off the boat into the old town. The Tarifa fast ferry does arrive at the city terminal.

Tanger Ville station puts Casablanca two hours and ten minutes away by high-speed train. A common pattern is to enter by ferry in the north, work south by road, and fly home from Marrakech - which avoids retracing a single kilometre.

Trips That Start in Tangier

Half day - the cape and the sea caves

Out west to the Cap Spartel lighthouse where the Atlantic runs into the Mediterranean, then down to the Caves of Hercules and the opening in the rock shaped like the map of Africa, returning through Marshan. Two or three hours, and the best short run we do here.

1 day - crossing from Spain and back

We collect you at Tanger Med or the fast-ferry berth, take the cape and the caves before lunch, lunch in the medina, then the kasbah and the Grand Socco, and return you to the port in good time for the last sailing.

1 day - the blue town and back

South through the Rif for two hours, the afternoon among Chefchaouen's lanes, then the climb to the Spanish Mosque as the light turns, and back into Tangier for the evening.

Transfer - south to Fes or Marrakech

Four hours to Fes, normally by way of Chefchaouen or Volubilis, or the longer haul down to Marrakech. This is how a north-to-south itinerary usually opens, with the same driver throughout.

Driving and Getting Around Tangier

Traffic here is light by the standards of Casablanca or Marrakech and the centre is small, but no vehicle enters the medina or the kasbah, and the approaches to the Grand Socco pinch in fast. Drivers therefore work from the perimeter and collect at whatever corner you agree.

Treat the airport and the ferry port as entirely different propositions. From the airport it is twenty predictable minutes; from Tanger Med it is a forty-minute drive on top of the port's own screening and shuttle system, which on a busy sailing adds another half hour again.

As for the N2, it covers 110 kilometres in about two hours and that ratio explains itself - unbroken switchbacks through the Rif, roadside stalls on the verges, and nothing whatever to be gained by pressing on. Good surface, deliberate pace.

Is Spanish enough to get by in Tangier?

For most purposes, yes. The north was a Spanish protectorate until 1956 and Spanish remains widely spoken - often ahead of French - in Tangier, Tetouan, Chefchaouen and Nador. Further south French takes over, but our drivers speak Spanish throughout.

How much is a private driver in Tangier?

How far is Tanger Med port from Tangier city?

Can we enter Morocco by ferry from Spain?

Easily, and for anyone already stopping over in Madrid it is an excellent way in. Tarifa to Tangier city takes about an hour; Algeciras to Tanger Med about ninety minutes. Send us your sailing and we meet the boat.

Is Chefchaouen possible as a day trip from Tangier?

Yes - two hours each way through the Rif leaves five or six hours in the town, where Spanish is also widely spoken. An overnight is better if you have it.

Train or car from Tangier to Casablanca?

The high-speed train is genuinely good - two hours ten, comfortable and cheap. Take the car instead if you want Chefchaouen, Volubilis or Meknes on the way, since the train passes none of them.
