Nador stands on the shore of Mar Chica, the largest lagoon in North Africa, a few kilometres from Melilla - Spanish since 1497 and, with Ceuta, one of only two land borders the European Union has on the African continent. For Spanish-speaking visitors that frontier is one of the more interesting things on this coast.
The city itself sees a tiny fraction of the foreign visitors who reach Marrakech or Fes. Most of its traffic is Moroccan families returning from jobs in Spain, ferry passengers off the Almeria and Motril routes, and people crossing to and from Melilla daily.
For travellers from Latin America it usually appears as a link rather than a destination - a way into Morocco from Spain that avoids Tangier, or the northern end of a drive down to Fes.
