Nador stands on the shore of Mar Chica, a 115 square kilometre lagoon that is the largest in North Africa, with the Rif mountains behind it. It sees a tiny fraction of the foreign visitors who reach Marrakech or Fes, and most of its traffic is Moroccan families returning from Europe, ferry passengers off the Almeria and Motril routes, and people crossing to and from Melilla.

For travellers from Asia this is a specialist stop rather than a mainstream one. It appears on itineraries that enter Morocco overland from Spain, or that work along the Mediterranean coast rather than heading straight for the south. On a standard trip it will not feature, and there is no reason it should.

Where it does appear, the logistics are exactly why a driver helps. The airport is 15 km out, the ferry terminal at Beni Ansar is somewhere else again, the Melilla border queue is unpredictable, and Saidia and Al Hoceima are serious drives along the coast. Every booking is private and the rate is agreed in advance.

Why hire a driver here

  • Arrivals split three ways - airport, ferry berth, frontier - all far apart
  • Any Melilla crossing has to be planned against the queue on that day
  • Ferry passengers from Europe never travel light
  • Saidia sits east and Al Hoceima west, and both are long runs
  • Fes is a five-hour drive inland via the Rif and the Taza gap

Included in every booking

  • Fuel, tolls and the driver's fee for the agreed route
  • Airport, ferry port, border or hotel pickup
  • English-speaking drivers as standard on the Asia site
  • Extra luggage capacity at no charge
  • Prayer and halal meal stops arranged along the coast

Airport and Port Transfers in Nador

The airport sits fifteen kilometres to the south and takes almost exclusively European flights - Spanish, Belgian, Dutch. Twelve kilometres in the other direction, right on the Melilla frontier, is Beni Ansar, an entirely separate port where the boats from Almeria and Motril tie up.

What complicates planning here is the crossing itself, which can run five minutes or ninety depending on nothing more predictable than the day and the hour. Our drivers use it constantly and can judge the timing rather than queueing blind. Send the flight or sailing details and we leave room accordingly.

Trips That Start in Nador

Transfer - into the city from either arrival point

Fifteen kilometres from the airport, twelve from the ferry terminal, so no great distance either way. Scheduled against your arrival, in a vehicle with the capacity a returning family actually needs.

1 day - the eastern beaches at Saidia

A run east to the long stretches of sand near the Algerian frontier, lunch overlooking the water, back by evening. This is the beach day that gets taken here.

1 day - west to Al Hoceima

Cliffs, coves and a national park at the end of a road with virtually nothing on it. Long, remarkable, and one of the least driven routes anywhere in Morocco.

Transfer - the road inland to Fes

Five hours through the Rif and the Taza gap, the usual way of tying this coast to the imperial cities. There is normally a stop for lunch in the middle.

Driving and Getting Around Nador

There is no difficulty driving in Nador itself - it is a small, modern city that never actually jams. The lagoon corniche is the pleasant stretch, and once you are in the centre you can walk it.

Planning turns entirely on which arrival point applies, since the three lie in different directions. Mistime the frontier in particular and you lose an hour a driver following the queue would have kept for you.

Westward the coastal road to Al Hoceima is beautiful and unhurried, cut into cliffs with long gaps between anything at all. Fuel and food are scarce enough that drivers arrange them in advance, and the road should not be attempted at night.

FAQs

Nador Car Hire With Driver - Your Questions

How much is a private driver in Nador?

A sedan with driver starts from about a day, an SUV roughly and a van , the usual choice for families off the ferry. Prices convert to your local currency automatically.

Would Nador fit into a normal Morocco itinerary?

Rarely. It sits a long way from what most visitors come for, and on a standard trip it makes little sense. It earns its place only if you are entering from Spain by sea, or deliberately working the Mediterranean coast.

Can you meet us at the Melilla border?

Yes, every day. The crossing takes anything from minutes to well over an hour, so give us an approximate time and the driver holds on the Moroccan side rather than leaving you to find a car at the barrier.

How far is Nador airport from the city?

Al Aroui lies about 15 km south, twenty minutes out. Beni Ansar's ferry terminal is 12 km north in the other direction entirely, so make clear which of the two you are coming into.

How long is the drive from Nador to Fes?

About five hours south through the Rif and the Taza gap, on decent roads throughout. It is the most common onward leg for anyone continuing into the rest of the country.

Can you take a large family group with heavy luggage?

It is the greater part of our Nador work. Vans and minibuses are standard here for the plain reason that ferry passengers arrive loaded, and luggage space costs nothing extra.
