Casablanca handles most of Morocco's long-haul traffic, so a connection through the Gulf or Istanbul will usually put you down here rather than in Marrakech. Mohammed V sits 30 km outside the city, which means clearing immigration after a long journey and then facing a real drive before you reach a hotel.
The city's one great sight is the Hassan II Mosque, completed in 1993 and built partly over the water. It holds twenty-five thousand worshippers inside and eighty thousand on the esplanade, and its minaret at 210 metres is the tallest in the world. For Muslim visitors it is a place to pray; for everyone else it is the only mosque in Morocco whose interior can be visited, through guided tours outside prayer times.
Beyond that, Casablanca is Morocco at its most commercial - a working port, a financial district, and the hardest city in the country to drive comfortably. Every booking is private, the rate is fixed in advance, and fuel, tolls and the driver are included.
