Merzouga is the Sahara people picture: orange dunes standing 150 metres above flat stony desert, camel trains at dusk, and a night sky with no light source for a hundred kilometres in any direction. For visitors from the cities of Asia, that darkness is usually what stays with them.
It is also nine hours from Marrakech and eight from Fes, and that distance shapes every itinerary built around it. Practically nobody drives it in one push and nobody should. Two days each way with a night in Dades or Ouarzazate is standard, and it turns the journey into the best part of the trip: Tizi n Tichka at 2,260 m, the kasbah at Ait Ben Haddou, the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs, the Todra Gorge.
This is the route where a driver stops being a convenience. Two Atlas crossings, passes that close briefly in winter, long stretches with no fuel and no signal, and a final handover at the edge of the sand. It also matters for meals - the stops on this road are limited, and catering at the camps has to be arranged rather than assumed.
