Merzouga is not a city. It is a small village at the western edge of Erg Chebbi, a 28 km field of orange dunes rising up to 150 metres, and it exists almost entirely for desert travel. Nobody arrives here by accident: it is nine hours from Marrakech, seven and a half from Fes, and the journey is a large part of the experience.
That journey is the reason people book a private vehicle. From Marrakech the route crosses the High Atlas at the Tizi n Tichka pass, drops to Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, then follows the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs through the Dades and Todra gorges. From Fes it climbs the Middle Atlas past Ifrane and Midelt before the long descent through the Ziz Valley palm groves. Both are extraordinary drives and both are far too long to rush.
At Merzouga itself, the paved road ends and the sand begins. Desert camps sit inside the erg, and the last stretch is done by 4x4 or camel. Our drivers make the handover at the dune edge, wait overnight in the village, and are ready when you come back out - so a Sahara night never means being stranded.
