Merzouga is the Sahara people actually picture: orange dunes standing 150 m above flat stony desert, camel trains at dusk, and a silence at night that even visitors from the Karoo find startling. It is also nine hours from Marrakech and eight from Fes, and that distance dictates the shape of every itinerary built around it.
Practically nobody drives it in one go, and nobody should. The standard approach is two days each way with a night in Dades or Ouarzazate, which turns the transfer itself into the best part of the trip: Tizi n Tichka at 2,260 m, the kasbah at Ait Ben Haddou, the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs, the Todra Gorge. Squeeze it into one day and you see none of it, through a windscreen you are too tired to use.

Two Atlas crossings, passes that shut briefly in winter, long empty stretches with no fuel and no signal, and a final handover at the edge of the sand where the road simply ends.
