Standing on the shore of Mar Chica, North Africa's largest lagoon, Nador is a Mediterranean city that receives a tiny share of the foreigners who make it to Marrakech or Fes. Its traffic is mostly Moroccan families returning from Europe, ferry passengers off the Almeria and Motril services, and people crossing back and forth to the Spanish enclave of Melilla just along the coast.
For South African travellers it generally shows up as a connection rather than a destination: a way into Morocco from Spain that skips Tangier, a stop on a Mediterranean coastal route, or the top of a drive down to Fes. The city has a long corniche and very good fish, but the reasons to be here are mostly practical.
