Standing on the shore of Mar Chica, North Africa's largest lagoon, Nador is a Mediterranean city that receives a tiny share of the foreigners who make it to Marrakech or Fes. Its traffic is mostly Moroccan families returning from Europe, ferry passengers off the Almeria and Motril services, and people crossing back and forth to the Spanish enclave of Melilla just along the coast.

For South African travellers it generally shows up as a connection rather than a destination: a way into Morocco from Spain that skips Tangier, a stop on a Mediterranean coastal route, or the top of a drive down to Fes. The city has a long corniche and very good fish, but the reasons to be here are mostly practical.

Those practicalities are exactly where a driver repays the cost. The airport lies 15 km out, the Beni Ansar ferry terminal somewhere else entirely, the Melilla queue defies prediction, and both the beaches and Al Hoceima are substantial drives along the coast. Every booking is private and the rate agreed beforehand.

Why hire a driver here

  • Airport, ferry terminal and border each face a different way
  • How long the Melilla queue runs decides when you should set off
  • Arrivals off the European boats bring more than a taxi will hold
  • Saidia's beaches and the Al Hoceima coast mean serious distances
  • Fes is five hours to the south, over the Rif and through Taza

Included in every booking

  • Fuel, tolls and the driver's fee for the agreed route
  • Airport, ferry port, border or hotel pickup
  • English-speaking drivers as standard on the South African site
  • Extra luggage capacity at no charge
  • Bottled water and phone charging in the vehicle

Airport and Port Transfers in Nador

Al Aroui (NDR) lies 15 km south of town and handles mainly European traffic - Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands above all. The ferry terminal at Beni Ansar, receiving the Almeria and Motril sailings, is a different port entirely, 12 km north and hard against the Melilla border.

It is the border that makes planning interesting. Depending on the day and the hour the queue can take five minutes or well past an hour, and our drivers have run it often enough to know when to go rather than simply joining the end of it. Send us the flight or sailing and we leave room for it.

Trips That Start in Nador

Transfer - Nador airport or ferry into the city

Fifteen kilometres out of Al Aroui, twelve from Beni Ansar, neither of them far. Timed against your flight or sailing, with the extra luggage capacity families arriving from Europe take as standard.

1 day - Saidia and the eastern beaches

East along the shore to the long sands at Saidia near the Algerian frontier, lunch on the front and an evening return. Nador's principal beach day.

1 day - Al Hoceima and the Mediterranean coast

West along a genuinely spectacular coast road towards Al Hoceima and the national park, nothing but cliffs, coves and almost empty tarmac. A long day, and among the least known drives in the country.

Transfer - Nador to Fes

Five hours south through the Rif and the Taza gap, the standard way of linking the Mediterranean coast to the imperial cities, usually with a lunch stop along the way.

Driving and Getting Around Nador

Nador is undemanding to drive: compact, modern and never gridlocked the way the larger cities become. The corniche along Mar Chica is the agreeable stretch, and the centre walks easily once you are in it.

It is the three arrival points that dictate the planning. Airport, ferry terminal and border face different ways, and a poorly timed border run in particular burns an hour that a driver watching the queues would have spared you.

Heading west to Al Hoceima the coast road is lovely and slow, cut into cliffs above the Mediterranean with long unpopulated stretches. Filling stations are scarce, so drivers top up before departing rather than trusting to luck, and it is no road to take after dark.

FAQs

Nador Car Hire With Driver - Your Questions

How much is a private driver in Nador in rand?

A sedan with driver starts from about a day, a 4x4 roughly and a van , the usual choice for families off the ferry. Prices convert to rand automatically and include fuel, tolls and the driver.

Can you meet us at the Melilla border?

Yes, as a daily matter. Crossing times swing considerably, so give us a rough hour and the driver waits on the Moroccan side rather than leaving you to hunt down transport at the barrier.

How far is Nador airport from the city?

Al Aroui lies some 15 km to the south, twenty minutes off. The Beni Ansar ferry port is 12 km north the other way, so it is worth stating clearly which of them you are coming into.

How long is the drive from Nador to Fes?

About five hours south through the Rif and the Taza gap on decent roads throughout. It is the most common onward leg from Nador for anyone continuing into the rest of the country.

Is Nador worth staying in?

For most South African itineraries it is a link rather than a destination - a way in from Spain or a waypoint on a Mediterranean route. The corniche and the fish are good, but with limited days, Al Hoceima and the coast road west are the better use of them.

Can you take a large family group with heavy luggage?

That accounts for most of our work here. Vans and minibuses are Nador's standard vehicle precisely because ferry arrivals come heavily laden, and luggage capacity costs nothing extra.
