Nador is the Moroccan city most closely tied to Europe and least visited by Europeans as tourists. Its traffic is overwhelmingly Moroccan families returning from jobs in Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, ferry passengers off the Almeria and Motril routes, and people crossing to and from Melilla a few kilometres up the coast.
For European travellers it usually appears as a link rather than a destination: a way into Morocco from Spain that avoids Tangier, a stop on a Mediterranean coastal route, or the northern end of a drive down to Fes. The city itself has a long corniche and good fish, but the reasons to be here are mostly practical.
It is precisely those practicalities that a driver resolves. The airport lies 15 km out, Beni Ansar's ferry berth is somewhere else entirely, queues at the Melilla frontier defy prediction, and both the beaches and Al Hoceima mean serious driving along the coast.
