Nador sits on the shore of Mar Chica, a 115 square kilometre lagoon that is the largest in North Africa, with the Rif mountains rising behind it. It sees a tiny fraction of the foreign visitors who reach Marrakech or Fes, and most of its traffic is Moroccan families returning from Europe, ferry passengers off the Almeria and Motril routes, and people crossing to and from Melilla.
For Indian travellers it generally appears as a connection rather than a destination - a way into Morocco from Spain that avoids Tangier, a stop on a Mediterranean coastal route, or the top of a drive down to Fes. The corniche is pleasant and the fish is excellent, but the reasons to be here are mostly practical.
It is precisely these practicalities that repay hiring a driver. The airport lies 15 km out, the Beni Ansar ferry terminal somewhere else entirely, the Melilla queue refuses prediction, and Saidia and Al Hoceima both mean serious driving along the coast.
