The city stands on the edge of Mar Chica, 115 square kilometres of lagoon with the Rif behind it and hardly a foreign visitor in sight. What traffic there is comes from Moroccan families driving home from Europe, from the Almeria and Motril ferries, and from the constant movement across the Melilla frontier.
For Hong Kong travellers this is a specialist stop rather than a mainstream one. It appears on itineraries that enter Morocco overland from Spain, or that work along the Mediterranean coast instead of heading straight south. On a standard week-long trip it will not feature at all, and there is no reason it should.
Where it does appear, the logistics are precisely why a driver helps. The airport is 15 km out, the ferry terminal at Beni Ansar is somewhere else again, the Melilla border queue is unpredictable, and Saidia and Al Hoceima are serious drives along the coast. Every booking is private and the rate is agreed in advance.
