The city stands on the edge of Mar Chica, 115 square kilometres of lagoon with the Rif behind it and hardly a foreign visitor in sight. What traffic there is comes from Moroccan families driving home from Europe, from the Almeria and Motril ferries, and from the constant movement across the Melilla frontier.

For Hong Kong travellers this is a specialist stop rather than a mainstream one. It appears on itineraries that enter Morocco overland from Spain, or that work along the Mediterranean coast instead of heading straight south. On a standard week-long trip it will not feature at all, and there is no reason it should.

Where it does appear, the logistics are precisely why a driver helps. The airport is 15 km out, the ferry terminal at Beni Ansar is somewhere else again, the Melilla border queue is unpredictable, and Saidia and Al Hoceima are serious drives along the coast. Every booking is private and the rate is agreed in advance.

Why hire a driver here

  • Three possible arrival points, none of them within reach of the others
  • A Melilla crossing can only be planned against the queue on the day
  • Luggage off a European ferry does not fit in a taxi
  • Both Saidia and Al Hoceima are long drives, in opposite directions
  • Fes is five hours inland by way of the Rif and the Taza gap

Included in every booking

  • Fuel, tolls and the driver's fee for the agreed route
  • Airport, ferry port, border or hotel pickup
  • English-speaking drivers as standard on the Hong Kong site
  • Extra luggage capacity at no charge
  • Bottled water and phone charging in the vehicle

Airport and Port Transfers in Nador

The airport, Al Aroui, is fifteen kilometres south and serves Europe almost exclusively - Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands. The ferry terminal is not near it: Beni Ansar lies twelve kilometres to the north, right against the Melilla frontier, and that is where the Almeria and Motril boats come in.

Nothing about the border is predictable. Five minutes on one morning, an hour and a half on another, depending entirely on the day and the hour. Because our drivers cross it constantly they can judge when to go rather than joining the back of the line - send the flight or sailing and we allow for it.

Trips That Start in Nador

Transfer - airport or ferry into town

Fifteen kilometres one way, twelve the other, so neither takes long. Timed to your arrival and always in something with room for a group's luggage.

1 day - along the coast to Saidia

Flat open beaches close to the Algerian border, lunch by the water and back before dark. This is the beach day that people here actually take.

1 day - the cliff road to Al Hoceima

West above the Mediterranean on a road cut into the cliffs, coves below, a national park at the far end and virtually no traffic on any of it. Long, and one of Morocco's least driven routes.

Transfer - inland to Fes

Five hours through the Rif and the Taza gap, linking this coast to the imperial cities. There is normally a lunch stop somewhere in the middle.

Driving and Getting Around Nador

Driving in Nador itself presents no difficulty - it is small, modern and never seizes up the way the larger cities do. The corniche beside the lagoon is the pleasant part of town, and the centre can be walked comfortably.

What requires thought is which of the three arrival points you are using, because they point in different directions. Getting the border timing wrong in particular can cost an hour that a driver paying attention to the queue would simply have avoided.

West towards Al Hoceima the road is spectacular and slow, cut into the cliff face above the sea with very little between the settlements. There are few places to refuel, so drivers do it before departing, and nobody should be on that road in the dark.

FAQs

Nador Car Hire With Driver - Your Questions

How much is a private driver in Nador in Hong Kong dollars?

A sedan with driver starts from about a day, an SUV roughly and a van . Prices convert to Hong Kong dollars automatically and include fuel, tolls and the driver.

Would Nador fit into a normal Morocco itinerary?

Rarely. It is a long way from everything most visitors come for, and on a week-long trip it makes no sense. It earns its place only if you are entering from Spain by sea, or deliberately working along the Mediterranean coast.

Can you meet us at the Melilla border?

Yes, every day. How long the crossing takes varies wildly, so give us a rough time and the driver will be holding on the Moroccan side rather than leaving you hunting for a car at the barrier.

How far is Nador airport from the city?

Al Aroui lies roughly 15 km to the south, twenty minutes away. Beni Ansar sits 12 km north in the other direction entirely, so do tell us which of the two you are coming into.

How long is the drive from Nador to Fes?

Five hours or so heading south over the Rif and through the Taza gap, on sound road the whole way. It remains the usual continuation for anyone pressing on into the interior.

Can you take a group with heavy luggage?

It accounts for most of our Nador work. Vans and minibuses are the default here precisely because ferry passengers arrive heavily loaded, and we charge nothing extra for the space.
