Tangier has been rebuilt faster than any other Moroccan city this century - the commercial port moved out to Tanger Med, the corniche was redone, and a high-speed line now reaches Casablanca in a little over two hours. That last point matters most for compact itineraries, because it makes the north reachable without losing a day to driving.

The logistics still need attention. Tanger Med is 40 km east of the city, so a ferry arrival is not a walk into the medina. The airport is 15 km south-west. The old town is small by Moroccan standards but still closed to vehicles, and the Rif roads south towards Chefchaouen are proper mountain driving rather than the motorway most people picture.

Every booking is private, so the shape of the day is yours: the cape and the caves in the morning light, the kasbah after, and then either a crossing to Spain or the road south. The rate is fixed before you travel and covers fuel, tolls and the driver.

Why hire a driver here

  • At 40 km from town, a Tanger Med arrival wants thinking through
  • Getting to Chefchaouen means real mountain road, not highway
  • Medina and kasbah are on foot only, with almost no vehicle access
  • The fast train to Casablanca takes just over two hours
  • Both Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules lie well beyond the city limits

Included in every booking

  • Fuel, tolls and the driver's fee for the agreed route
  • Airport, ferry port, hotel or Tanger Ville station pickup
  • English-speaking drivers as standard on the Hong Kong site
  • Ferry timing coordination for same-day returns to Spain
  • Bottled water and phone charging in the vehicle

Airport and Port Transfers in Tangier

The airport is the straightforward one: 15 km out, twenty minutes, no complications. Tanger Med is not - 40 km east along the coast, closer to forty minutes, and passengers regularly step off the Algeciras boat expecting to already be in the medina.

For onward travel the high-speed train from Tanger Ville reaches Casablanca in two hours ten. On a compact trip that is often the right way south, with a private vehicle handling the days at either end. We collect from the platform exactly as we collect from arrivals.

Trips That Start in Tangier

Half day - Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules

West along the coast to the lighthouse where two seas meet, then the Caves of Hercules with their Africa-shaped opening onto the water, back through the Marshan quarter. Two to three hours, and best in the morning for the light through the cave mouth.

1 day - Tangier from Tarifa or Algeciras

Met at Tanger Med or the fast-ferry terminal, the cape and the caves in the morning, lunch in the medina, kasbah and Grand Socco after, back at the port with margin against the last sailing.

1 day - Chefchaouen and back

Two hours across the Rif to the blue town, an afternoon among its lanes, the walk up to the Spanish Mosque as the light softens, and Tangier again that evening.

Transfer - Tangier to Fes or Marrakech

Four hours towards the south-east to Fes, generally taking in Chefchaouen or Volubilis, or the longer haul down to Marrakech. It makes the obvious first leg of a north-to-south itinerary run by one driver.

Driving and Getting Around Tangier

By Moroccan standards Tangier drives easily - the centre is small and the traffic never reaches Casablanca levels. What a vehicle cannot do is enter the medina or the kasbah, and the streets feeding the Grand Socco narrow quickly, so drivers work from the edge and collect at an agreed corner.

Do not treat the airport and the ferry port as equivalent. One is twenty predictable minutes; the other is a forty-minute drive followed by the port's own security screening and internal shuttles, which on a full sailing eats another half hour.

The N2 south covers 110 km in roughly two hours, which tells you most of what you need to know - continuous switchbacks through the Rif, stalls set up on the verges, and no reason whatever to hurry. The surface is good; the pace is deliberate.

FAQs

Tangier Car Hire With Driver - Your Questions

How much is a private driver in Tangier in Hong Kong dollars?

A sedan with driver starts from about a day, an SUV roughly and a van . Prices convert to Hong Kong dollars automatically and include fuel, tolls and the driver.

How far is Tanger Med port from Tangier city?

About 40 km east, roughly 40 minutes. It catches out plenty of visitors who assume the ferry docks in the city - the old port no longer takes the Algeciras route. The Tarifa fast ferry does arrive at the city terminal, which is far closer.

Can we cross to Spain for the day?

The fast ferry to Tarifa takes about an hour, and HKSAR passport holders enter the Schengen area visa-free for short stays, so it is genuinely straightforward. Send us your ferry times and we plan the Moroccan side around them.

Train or car from Tangier to Casablanca?

Take the train if Casablanca is the only stop - two hours ten, comfortable and cheap. Take the car if you want Chefchaouen, Volubilis or Meknes on the way, since the train passes none of them.

Is Chefchaouen possible as a day trip from Tangier?

Yes - two hours each way through the Rif leaves five or six hours in the town. It makes a long day, and an overnight is better if you have it, but on a tight itinerary the day trip is the practical answer.

Do you meet cruise passengers at the port?

Yes. Give us the ship and the all-aboard time and we plan against it. Tangier calls tend to be short, so we prioritise the cape, the caves and the kasbah rather than trying to cover everything.
