The old international zone of writers and spies now has a high-speed rail terminal, a rebuilt marina and Africa's largest container port. For travellers it is the natural entry point from Spain, and the start of the road south through the Rif.

Airport and Port Transfers in Tangier

Tanger Med is the port that catches most people out. Ferries from Algeciras and Tarifa arrive there rather than at the old city port, and it is 45 km east along the motorway. The terminal is large, the taxi rank outside is competitive, and a pre-booked driver holding your name at the exit is the simplest solution.

Ibn Battouta Airport (TNG) is much closer, 12 km southwest, around 20 minutes from the medina. Tanger Ville station, served by the Al Boraq high-speed line from Casablanca and Rabat, is in the city itself. Driving and Getting Around Tangier

Tangier is built on a hill above its bay, so the city divides into the low medina and port area and the higher districts of the Ville Nouvelle and Malabata. Streets in the kasbah are stepped and narrow, and the Grand Socco is a permanent bottleneck of taxis and pedestrians.

The motorway network here is excellent. The A1 runs south to Rabat and Casablanca and the link road east to Tanger Med is fast and modern, so long transfers are quick and comfortable. The contrast with the mountain road to Chefchaouen is sharp: that route is well surfaced but constantly winding, and it is worth having a driver who takes the bends at a pace that keeps everyone comfortable.

Because Tangier is a border city with heavy ferry traffic, police checkpoints on the roads out of town are routine. They are quick and polite, and a registered local driver with the correct paperwork passes them without fuss.
