Agadir was rebuilt from nothing after the 1960 earthquake, which is why it feels unlike any other Moroccan city: wide boulevards, a long crescent beach, and hotels rather than a medina. It is a comfortable base with 300 days of sunshine a year, and almost everything worth a day trip is a drive away rather than a walk.
That is what our drivers do here. The classic runs are north up the coast to the surf towns of Tamraght, Taghazout and Imsouane, inland to the palm-lined pools of Paradise Valley, or east to Taroudant, a walled town often described as a smaller, calmer Marrakech. Further south the road reaches Tiznit, the arch at Legzira beach and the old Spanish town of Sidi Ifni.
Agadir is also the natural link between the coast and the mountains. Marrakech is three hours north, Essaouira two and a half up the coast, and the Anti-Atlas roads towards Tafraoute climb into some of the most striking granite scenery in Morocco. A private vehicle turns all of these into easy days.
