Tangier is where Morocco meets Europe. Ferries from Tarifa and Algeciras arrive daily, Ibn Battouta airport takes more flights every year, and Al Boraq - Africa's high-speed train - reaches Casablanca in a little over two hours. A great many Moroccan trips start here, and the first logistical problem is almost always the same: how to get from where you landed to the hotel or the next city.
Tanger Med, which handles most of the ferry traffic, is 45 km east of the city - a distance that surprises people who have just driven down through Spain. Taxis exist, but haggling after a long crossing is not a pleasant start. Our driver waits with a name board, clears the checkpoint and takes you straight to Tangier, Chefchaouen or Fes.
The most requested trip from here is Chefchaouen: two and a half hours through the Rif mountains to the blue city. Second is the coastal run to Cap Spartel, the Caves of Hercules and Asilah, a walled town of white ramparts and painted murals an hour south.
