Rabat is the kind of capital that surprises visitors: wide boulevards, a tram, parks along the river and a UNESCO site in the middle of town. The ministries and embassies are here, along with much of the country's administrative life, and that shapes what we do - a great deal of official travel, conferences and transfers that have to happen at an exact time.
For British visitors Rabat is often either a working trip or the quiet leg of a longer tour. The sights are compact but spread out: the Kasbah of the Udayas above the Bou Regreg estuary, the Hassan Tower with its unfinished minaret, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the Chellah necropolis with its Roman ruins and storks' nests, and the medina. You can walk between them, but with a car and driver one afternoon covers the lot.
Rabat also works well as a base. Casablanca is an hour down the motorway, Meknes and Volubilis two and a half, Tangier two and a half. Plenty of business travellers stay here for the calm and hold their meetings in Casablanca with a driver waiting between them.
