Rabat is where Australians in Morocco on official or corporate business tend to spend their time, and where leisure travellers consistently underestimate how much they will enjoy it. The Australian Embassy sits here alongside the ministries and most of the diplomatic corps, and the city has a calm, ordered feel a long way from Marrakech.
It is also a genuinely good place to visit. The Kasbah of the Udayas is a blue-and-white quarter above the mouth of the Bou Regreg with a view across to Sale; the Chellah is a Roman city that became a Merinid necropolis and is now half garden, half ruin, full of storks; the Hassan Tower is the unfinished minaret of what would have been the largest mosque in the world.
