Marrakech is Morocco's busiest arrival point and, for Australians, the end of a very long journey. Qatar, Emirates and Etihad all connect through their hubs, with Royal Air Maroc or a European carrier on the final leg, and most people touch down having been travelling the best part of a day. The rental counter is a poor place to be at that moment.

What waits outside is genuinely different from driving at home. Morocco drives on the right, which is the first adjustment; the medina is a sealed network of one-way lanes no car can enter, which is the second; and the roundabouts by the ramparts work on eye contact rather than give-way rules, which catches out even confident drivers. Add jet lag from an eight or nine-hour time difference and the first day behind the wheel is not a good one.

Every booking is private. The vehicle, the driver and the day belong to your group alone, so you can head for the desert before dawn, pull over on the Kik Plateau for photographs, or spend an extra hour at an argan co-op without negotiating with anyone. Airport and Port Transfers in Marrakech

Menara (RAK) sits just 6 km south-west of the medina, so the run itself is short - but the arrivals hall backs up when several European flights land together, and haggling at a taxi rank at the end of a twenty-hour journey is nobody's idea of an arrival. Your driver waits inside the terminal with a name board and walks you straight to the car.

Marrakech is also the southern terminus of the railway. Trains from Casablanca and Rabat come into Gueliz, and a lot of Australian itineraries pair the train in the north with a private car in the south where the line ends. Station pick-ups work exactly as airport ones do, at the same fixed price.

Trips That Start in Marrakech

1 day - Ourika Valley and the Atlas foothills

Away after breakfast, a stop at a Berber house and an argan co-operative, the walk up to the Setti Fatma waterfalls, lunch beside the river and back mid-afternoon. The gentlest mountain day going, and the right choice if you are still shaking off the flight.

1 day - Essaouira on the Atlantic

Two and a half hours through the argan forest where the goats really do climb the trees, then five hours on the ramparts, in the fishing harbour and around the old Portuguese quarter before heading back at sunset.

3 days - Marrakech to Merzouga and back

Tizi n Tichka, Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate on day one; the Dades and Todra gorges to the Erg Chebbi dunes and a night in a desert camp on day two; back through the Draa Valley palm groves on day three. The centrepiece of most Australian itineraries.

7 days - imperial cities and the south

Marrakech, Casablanca, Rabat and Fes, then south through Ifrane and Midelt to the desert and back along the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs, with the same driver and vehicle throughout. The right shape for a trip you have flown a very long way to take.

Driving and Getting Around Marrakech

Marrakech traffic mixes petit taxis, scooters, horse-drawn caleches and delivery carts, and the roundabouts by the walls run on eye contact rather than lane discipline. Combine that with driving on the right for the first time and most Australians spend day one gripping the wheel. With a driver, day one is spent in the souks.

The medina is pedestrian. Cars reach a few of the wider streets but not the derbs where most riads sit, so every arrival ends in a short walk. Give us the riad name when you book and the driver picks the closest gate - it can save fifteen minutes of dragging a bag over uneven stone.

Beyond the city the roads are good but particular. The N9 to Ouarzazate tops out at 2,260 m on Tizi n Tichka and is being resurfaced in sections; snow closes it for a few hours some winter days, which our drivers check before setting off. The N8 to Agadir and the R207 to Essaouira are straightforward but policed hard for speed.

Should I hire a car and drive myself in Morocco?

You can, and the toll motorways are excellent. But Morocco drives on the right, city traffic is assertive, the mountain passes are demanding, and you will be doing all of it jet-lagged after twenty hours in transit. Once you add insurance, the deposit hold and one-way drop fees, most of our Australian customers find the driver costs little more and removes the lot.

Can the driver get into the Marrakech medina?

Not the whole way. The medina is a network of narrow lanes closed to traffic, so the driver sets you down at the nearest gate - usually Bab Doukkala, Bab Laksour or Bab Agnaou depending on the riad - and helps with the luggage to the mouth of the derb. Send us the riad name in advance and we pick the shortest walk.

How long is the drive from Marrakech to the Sahara?

Around nine hours to Merzouga, so almost nobody does it in one hit. The usual pattern is two days with a night in Dades or Ouarzazate, stopping at Ait Ben Haddou, the Todra Gorge and the rose valley at Kelaa M'Gouna. Three days is more comfortable, and if you have flown from Australia you have probably built the time in anyway.

Do you take card, or should we bring cash?

Bookings are confirmed by email with the price fixed in advance. You can settle in cash - Australian dollars, euros or dirhams - or arrange a bank transfer before you travel. Ask when you book and we will confirm in writing what suits you.

Can we keep one driver for a two or three-week trip?

That is the most common Australian booking we take, because nobody flies this far for four days. The driver stays with you for the whole route, covers his own room and meals in each town at no cost to you, and adjusts the plan day by day. You pay only the agreed daily rate for the vehicle.
