Getting to Morocco from New Zealand is a serious undertaking - typically thirty hours and two connections through the Gulf, Singapore or a European hub. Nobody makes that journey for a long weekend, which is why our New Zealand bookings run longer than most: two or three weeks rather than one, and often the whole country rather than a corner of it.
It also means arriving comprehensively wrecked, eleven or twelve hours out on the clock and in no condition to negotiate a rental agreement. The first day here is not one to spend learning to drive on the right, which is the change New Zealanders notice first and adapt to slowest.
The medina compounds it. It is a sealed grid of one-way lanes admitting no vehicle at all, and parking near Jemaa el-Fna is settled with an informal attendant rather than paid at a machine. Every booking is private: the vehicle, the driver and the day belong to your party alone, at a price agreed before you leave home covering fuel, tolls and the driver.
