Merzouga is the Sahara most people picture: orange dunes rising 150 m out of flat stony desert, camel trains at sunset, complete silence at night. It is also nine hours from Marrakech and eight from Fes, and that single fact shapes every itinerary built around it.
Almost nobody drives it in one push, and nobody should. The standard pattern is two days each way with an overnight in Dades or Ouarzazate, which turns the transfer itself into the best part of the trip: Tizi n Tichka at 2,260 m, the kasbah at Ait Ben Haddou, the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs, the Todra Gorge. Doing it in one day means seeing none of it through a windscreen you are too tired to look through.
This is the route where a driver stops being a convenience and becomes the sensible option. Two Atlas crossings, passes that can close in winter, long stretches with no fuel or phone signal, and a final handover at the edge of the sand where the road runs out. Our drivers run it weekly.
