Visitors from the Gulf arrive at Erg Chebbi with more desert experience than most, and it is worth saying plainly how this one differs. It is not a continuous sand sea like the Rub al Khali. Erg Chebbi is a single erg roughly 28 km long and 5 km wide, standing abruptly out of flat hamada, with the High Atlas visible behind it on clear mornings. The contrast is what makes it photograph the way it does.

Getting there is the commitment. Merzouga is nine hours from Marrakech and eight from Fes, and practically nobody drives it in one go. The standard approach is two days each way with a night in Dades or Ouarzazate, which turns the journey itself into the best part: Tizi n Tichka at 2,260 m, the kasbah at Ait Ben Haddou, the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs, the Todra Gorge.

This is where a driver stops being a convenience. Two Atlas crossings, passes that close briefly in winter, long stretches with no fuel and no signal, and a final handover at the edge of the sand where the road simply ends. Our drivers run it weekly. Every booking is private and the price is settled before you travel.

Trips That Start in Merzouga

3 days - Marrakech to Merzouga and back

Tizi n Tichka, Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate on day one; the gorges and the dunes with a night in camp on day two; back through the Draa Valley on day three. Our most-booked desert trip.

4 days - Marrakech to Fes through the desert

South over the Atlas, east along the kasbah road, a night at Erg Chebbi, then north up the Ziz Gorge through Ifrane into Fes. No repeated ground and the best way to link the two cities.

2 days - Fes to Merzouga, one way

Cedar forests, Midelt and the Ziz Gorge on day one with a night near the dunes, sunrise at the erg on day two. Usually part of a longer loop rather than a trip in itself.

5 days - the full southern circuit

Marrakech, Ait Ben Haddou, Dades, Todra, Merzouga, the Draa Valley and Zagora, returning over the Atlas with one driver and one vehicle throughout.

Driving and Getting Around Merzouga

Merzouga village amounts to a few streets, some shops and the auberges lined along the edge of the sand. The dunes rise directly behind them, and past the last building there is no surfaced road at all.

The handover to your camp happens at the dune edge - by camel for the traditional arrival, or by 4x4 if you have heavy luggage, small children or anyone with limited mobility. Your driver sleeps in the village and is waiting when you come off the sand in the morning. That is included, not an extra.

Signal thins from the Todra Gorge onwards and is effectively absent in the erg. Leave your route with someone at home and agree pickup times with the driver rather than assuming you can call from the camp.

FAQs

Merzouga Car Hire With Driver - Your Questions

How much is a 4x4 with driver to Merzouga in AED?

A 4x4 with driver runs about a day and a van , covering vehicle, driver, fuel, tolls and the driver's own room and meals on the road. Prices convert to AED automatically. The desert camp is booked separately.

How does Erg Chebbi compare to the Empty Quarter?

It is smaller and sharply bounded - a single erg about 28 km long standing out of flat stone desert, rather than a continuous sand sea. What it offers instead is contrast: dunes, palm oases, gorges and the High Atlas all within a day of each other.

Are there luxury camps with private bathrooms?

Yes, and they suit family groups far better than shared-facility camps. Private tents with en-suite bathrooms run roughly 900 to 1,800 dirhams per person with half board. We recommend camps at every level and state the price openly rather than folding it into the car rate.

Can we reach the camp by vehicle instead of by camel?

Yes. The camel trek is the traditional arrival and takes about an hour, but every camp is reachable by 4x4 across the sand - the better choice with young children, heavy luggage or any mobility issue. Say so when you book.

How long is the drive from Marrakech to Merzouga?

Around nine hours, which is why it runs over two days with a night in Dades or Ouarzazate. Anyone selling it as a single-day return is proposing eighteen hours in a vehicle.

When is the best time for the desert?

October to April. The days are comfortable and the nights clear and cold. If you are travelling in the Gulf summer, the desert still works but the schedule has to bend around the heat.
