Merzouga is the Sahara people actually picture: orange dunes standing 150 m above flat stony desert, camel trains at dusk, and a silence at night that most visitors find genuinely startling. It is also nine hours from Marrakech and eight from Fes, and that distance dictates the shape of every itinerary built around it.
Practically nobody drives it in one push, and nobody should. The standard approach is two days each way with a night in Dades or Ouarzazate, which converts the transfer itself into the best part of the trip: Tizi n Tichka at 2,260 m, the kasbah at Ait Ben Haddou, the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs, the Todra Gorge. Compress it into one day and you see none of it, through a windshield you are too tired to use.
