Tangier has been remade faster than any other Moroccan city this century. The commercial port moved out to Tanger Med, the corniche was rebuilt, and a high-speed line now reaches Casablanca in a shade over two hours. For South Africans it usually shows up as the top end of a north-to-south route, often bolted onto a European stopover.

The logistics deserve a look. Tanger Med sits 40 km east of the city, so a ferry arrival is not a walk into the medina. The airport is 15 km south-west. The old town is small by Moroccan standards but still closed to vehicles, and the Rif roads south towards Chefchaouen are proper mountain driving rather than the highway most people picture.

Every booking is private, so the shape of the day belongs to you: the cape and the caves before lunch, the kasbah after, and then either a ferry back to Spain or the road south. The rate is fixed before you travel and covers fuel, tolls and the driver.

Why hire a driver here

  • Sitting 40 km from town, Tanger Med makes a ferry arrival worth planning
  • Getting to Chefchaouen is mountain driving from start to finish
  • Medina and kasbah are walked; vehicles hardly get in at all
  • Day crossings from Spain run to a timetable you plan in reverse
  • Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules are both out of town

Included in every booking

  • Fuel, tolls and the driver's fee for the agreed route
  • Airport, ferry port, hotel or Tanger Ville station pickup
  • English-speaking drivers as standard on the South African site
  • Ferry timing coordination for same-day returns to Spain
  • Bottled water and phone charging in the vehicle

Ibn Battouta (TNG) is 15 km south-west of the centre, an easy 20-minute run. Tanger Med, where the Algeciras ferries dock, is 40 km east and closer to 40 minutes - a gap that catches out anyone expecting to walk off the boat into the old town.

Tanger Ville station puts Casablanca two hours and ten minutes off by high-speed train, which makes a north-south itinerary straightforward. A common pattern is train one way and private car the other, and we meet trains exactly as we meet flights.

Trips That Start in Tangier

Half day - Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules

West along the coast to the lighthouse where two seas meet, then the Caves of Hercules with their Africa-shaped opening onto the water, returning through the Marshan quarter. Two to three hours and the best short outing here.

1 day - Tangier from Tarifa or Algeciras

Collected at Tanger Med or the fast-ferry terminal, cape and caves before noon, lunch in the medina, then the kasbah and Grand Socco, back at the port with time in hand against the last sailing.

1 day - Chefchaouen and back

Two hours south over the Rif into the blue town, an afternoon spent in the medina and the climb to the Spanish Mosque viewpoint as the light turns, returning to Tangier by evening.

Transfer - Tangier to Fes or Marrakech

Four hours south-east to Fes, usually by way of Chefchaouen or Volubilis, or a longer run south to Marrakech. The natural opening leg of a north-to-south trip with one driver throughout.

Driving and Getting Around Tangier

The centre is compact and the traffic mild by Moroccan standards, but the medina and kasbah are pedestrian and the lanes around the Grand Socco are tight. Drivers set down at the edge and collect from an agreed point rather than attempting the old town.

The two arrival points could hardly be less alike. From the airport the run is short and dependable; Tanger Med adds a genuine drive on top of the port's security and shuttle routine, which on a busy sailing costs a further half hour. Allow for that on any same-day return to Spain.

The N2 up to Chefchaouen is true mountain road - 110 km covered in two hours, hairpin after hairpin, stalls set out along the verge. The surface is sound and it is not dangerous, but it is no road to hurry, and our drivers hold a steady pace.

FAQs

Tangier Car Hire With Driver - Your Questions

How much is a private driver in Tangier in rand?

A sedan with driver starts from about a day, a 4x4 roughly and a van . Prices convert to rand automatically and include fuel, tolls and the driver.

How far is Tanger Med from Tangier city?

Some 40 km east, about forty minutes. It surprises a fair few visitors who assume the boat berths in town - the old port gave up the Algeciras route long ago. The Tarifa fast ferry does dock at the city terminal, which is far nearer.

Can we do Tangier as a day trip from Spain?

Easily, and we run it most days in season. Send your ferry times when you book and we work the day backwards from the return sailing with a margin. Cap Spartel, the caves, the medina and the kasbah all fit.

Is Chefchaouen possible as a day trip from Tangier?

Yes - two hours each way through the Rif leaves five or six hours in the town. It is a long day and an overnight is better if you have it, but plenty of people do it and come back pleased.

Train or car from Tangier to Casablanca?

The high-speed train is genuinely good - two hours ten, comfortable and inexpensive. Use it if Casablanca is your only destination. Take the car instead if you want Chefchaouen, Volubilis or Meknes along the way, because the train serves none of them.

Do you meet cruise passengers at the port?

Yes. Provide the ship and the all-aboard time and we plan around them. Calls at Tangier run short, so we put the cape, the caves and the kasbah first rather than attempting everything.
