A French architect designed this walled port in the eighteenth century for a Moroccan sultan, and the result resembles nowhere else in the country: Portuguese-style ramparts, a medina laid out in straight lines rather than knots, a fishing harbour that still earns a living, and wind that scarcely ever drops.

For a trip with limited days, nothing else within reach of Marrakech repays the time as well. Two and a half hours out, five or six hours in a town you can genuinely cover, two and a half hours back, and dinner in Marrakech.

For photographers the harbour at first light is the subject: the blue boats packed in against the ramparts, the gulls, the nets coming ashore. That means either staying the night or leaving Marrakech at five, and both are worth doing. Every booking is private and the rate is agreed in advance.

Why hire a driver here

  • The best single day trip from Marrakech, at two and a half hours each way
  • Walled and closed to traffic, the medina takes you only as far as its gates
  • It runs around twenty degrees cooler than Marrakech in summer
  • The harbour at first light is the photograph, which needs an early start
  • The run south to Agadir along the coast justifies itself as a drive

Included in every booking

  • Fuel, tolls and the driver's fee for the agreed route
  • Marrakech hotel, riad or airport pickup
  • English-speaking drivers as standard on the Hong Kong site
  • Photo stops at the argan trees and co-operatives
  • Pre-dawn departures for the harbour at first light

Essaouira-Mogador (ESU) is a small airport 10 km south of town with mostly seasonal European flights, so Hong Kong visitors nearly always arrive via Marrakech. The coast road south to Agadir takes about three hours and makes a better onward leg than doubling back.

Trips That Start in Essaouira

1 day - the standard run and return

An eight o'clock start, goats in the argan trees, a co-operative, and then close to six hours for the ramparts, the harbour and the medina before turning back with the light behind you. Marrakech's most-booked day out, by a distance.

Transfer - one way, staying on

Same road, same stops, but delivered to your riad rather than turned around. The sensible option for two or three nights, and run in reverse for the flight home.

1 day - south to the empty sand

Sidi Kaouki first, then kilometre after kilometre of beach with essentially nobody on it. Half a day works; a full day is better.

Transfer - on down to Agadir

Three hours through Tamanar and the argan hills, one of the country's better drives, and the sensible way to join the two Atlantic towns without retreating inland.

Driving and Getting Around Essaouira

Cars stop at the walls here, as everywhere in Morocco - but this medina was drawn up on a grid by an architect rather than accumulating over centuries, and the difference is enormous. Get out at Bab Doukkala or Bab Marrakech and everything beyond is level, close together and impossible to lose yourself in.

In high season, and on any weekend when Marrakech heads for the coast, the parking outside the ramparts is simply full. Arriving with a driver sidesteps the problem entirely: you are dropped at the gate and collected from it at whatever hour you name.

The road in from Marrakech, the R207, is straightforward and well surfaced, with speed cameras on the longer straights and fines payable at the roadside. On the argan trees, one honest note: the goats standing photogenically within sight of the highway have generally been put there. Ask the driver and he will take you to trees where they climbed up by themselves.

FAQs

Essaouira Car Hire With Driver - Your Questions

How much is a private driver to Essaouira in Hong Kong dollars?

A sedan with driver starts from about a day, an SUV roughly and a van . Prices convert to Hong Kong dollars automatically and include fuel, tolls and the driver.

Is Essaouira the best day trip from Marrakech?

For most visitors, yes. Two and a half hours each way gets you a walled Atlantic port, a working harbour, a medina you can actually navigate and twenty degrees of temperature relief. Nothing else within reach delivers as much in one day.

When should we photograph the harbour?

First light, when the boats are still packed in and the catch is coming ashore. From Marrakech that means leaving around five; the alternative is to stay the night, which we would generally recommend if the harbour is the reason you are going.

How long is the drive from Marrakech to Essaouira?

Two and a half hours in each direction on decent road, three if you stop in the argan forest. It sits comfortably within a day, though many visitors extend it to two or three nights.

Is the medina easy to walk?

Easier than any other in Morocco. It was planned on a grid, it is flat, and it is small enough that you cannot get seriously lost - the exact opposite of Fes.

Can the driver take us on to Agadir instead of back to Marrakech?

Yes - three hours along the coastline and one of the more rewarding roads in Morocco. Taken one way with the same driver and car, so no stretch is covered twice.
